When life gives you Lemons

For a long time I hated the world. Some negative experiences and circumstances made me think “why me?” As one does in situations such as these, we often wonder “why me”? Especially as children. So many afflictions exist in the world, however as I grew older I realised, no matter what cards we are dealt with, it’s in our best interest to move forward. I believe, that to move forward with a positive outlook, a positive mindset is one’s greatest strength. To be beaten down but bounce back stronger, to learn from past experiences, to want to do better and to want to be better.

I have always loved lemons. ever since I was a child, as far back as I can remember, the fact of the matter is; I have always loved lemons. From using it as a staple ingredient in all of my favourite dishes, to having it mixed with salt and chilli right out of the pack, the mouthwatering sourness has always had me on a chokehold.

Speaking to my mum recently, she revealed to me how badly and desperately she craved for lemons, while she was pregnant with me. “When life gives you lemons” was inspired firstly by my love for lemons, And secondly by my mother’s love for them when she was carrying me in her womb. 

I was born in Arubote, a small village in Nepal. Without any source of analgesia, healthcare and proper equipment, she described this experience as “being stuck between life and death”. Overcoming the immense pain, struggle and suffering to bring life into this world, to bring me into this world. I am forever grateful to her, for this bittersweet and beautiful life.

In many cultures, lemons represent strength, vitality, love, fertility and abundance. When I look at this painting, my mood is instantly uplifted and I know it’s going to be a good day. The vibrant bright yellow of the lemons represent happiness and optimism, while the contrasting blue background brings feelings of peace and calmness. The fallen lemon flowers on the silk cloth adds a beautiful touch, all brought together to create a breathtaking piece of art.

I felt many emotions when creating this piece and I hold this painting very dear to my heart.
